Ava Vidal
Ava Vidal is a cool and composed performer with an intriguing past. She was a teenage mum, she earned a living as a prison officer before turning to stand-up, a move inspired by watching Chris Rock. Ava became a mother at 18, and spent five years as a prison guard at Pentonville. A chance viewing of a Chris Rock routine inspired her to pursue a career in comedy, and she quickly became a fixture of the stand-up circuit. Ava Vidal juggles motherhood with a hectic schedule of club dates and TV appearances, both as a comedian and a commentator. Critically judged as ‘a face of the future’, Ava performs in the UK, America, Canada and Australia, and is an occasional journalist.
Ava Vidal has become a regular presence on television since she turned heads as the BBC New Comedy Awards’ only female finalist in the very first year of her career. She has appeared on Mock the Week, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Comedy Central’s The World Stands Up, Edinburgh and Beyond and C4 reality show Kings of Comedy. Ava was the subject of the documentary From the Top, detailing her background and development as a comedian.
As a commentator, Ava has contributed to The Wright Stuff, Daybreak, ITN News and BBC World Have Your Say. She has written for The Independent and The Guardian, and has used racist abuse directed at her as fuel for her acclaimed solo stand-up show.
In a less serious vein, she has also appeared on ‘a couple of Top 100 shows where people like me who have achieved nothing get to comment on more successful people that have made a few mistakes.’
Critics say:
‘Well-structured, well written and skilfully delivered’ – The Scotsman
‘Effective laughs from a position not often heard… Juggles the profound and the irreverent rapidly alternating between the two.’ Chortle
‘Stand-up with a harsh, dark edge, a refreshing change from all the feel-good crap.’ Melbourne Age
HOWARD READ
Howard Read is a comic, writer, animator and actor, in that order. He is best known for being one half (and the other half), of the Big Howard, Little Howard, the world’s first human cartoon double-act. He is also an acclaimed stand-up comic, writer, author, illustrator and animator.
Howard has just finished making his 13 part series Little Howard’s Big Question on CBBC on BBC1, which is now being repeated on the CBBC channel. A sitcom, with facts, LHBQ has appeals to children and adults alike. Described by The Daily Mail as “a joy, with clever scripts that ring true of that magical time of childhood, while, thanks to Big Howard, it’s incredibly, achingly funny”..
Howard is a lot like the Kelloggs company in that he never makes cereal for anyone else. He also doesn’t generally write or animate for anyone else. He has made two acceptions in the past. Howard has animated four short films for Ross Noble which open his live shows on his world tours. He has also written, briefly for Ricky Gervais in the great man’s least well-received TV series Meet Ricky Gervais.
Howard headlines comedy clubs all accross the UK, as well as having gigged in New York, Iceland, Dubai, Shanghai and in the French Alps. He’s appeared on The World Stands Up on The Paramount Comedy Channel, ABC Australia and BBC America. The was nominated for the 2009 Toburg Musical Comedy Award for his much praised Unpleasant Lullaby. Howard appeared on 100 Greatest Celebrity Melt-downs (Sky One). This is one of his least proud moment, but apparently the one that most people have seen.
“One of the highlights of the show… the embodiment of variety in the 21st century” The Stage.
“You stormed that lad” Jimmy Tarbuck
“Fabulous! Outrageous but Fabulous!” Michael Ball
JOSEPH WILSON
Joseph Wilson started his multi talented career at the age of 18 with aplomb and has flourished into a comedic force to be reckoned with. A stand up comedian, actor, voice over artist, a television warm up and a writer, Joseph has carved out an impressive CV. Joseph is a likeable stand up and impressionist who’s energetic, physical and improvised style has been wowing audiences from Britain, Holland, Israel, France & USA.
Speaking of travelling, Joseph recorded a special podcast episode ‘Cuba, Cubita’ whilst he was there. Perfect moment to push the podcast, right?
The Social Hand Grenade Podcast interviews comedians, actors and life’s live wires about their process including The Morgan Freeman Impression and each guest’s ‘social hand grenade moment (social faux pas)’.
